Mosquito Physical Characteristics

  1. Flying mosquitoes flap their wings from about 300 to over 700 times per second.

  2. Mosquitoes have been found on mountains at elevations up to 13,000 feet and in mine shafts as far down as 3,000 feet below the surface. You just can’t get away from them.

  3. If you cut the sensory nerve in the mosquito’s stomach, it will keep sucking blood until it bursts.

  4. A mosquito can fly 1 – 1.5 miles per hour.

  5. A mosquito can smell its prey from 20 – 35 meters (That’s roughly 2- 4 first downs.)

  6. Mosquito saliva contains an anticoagulant (something that keeps blood from clotting).

  7. About 200,000 mosquitoes equal a pound. A single one weighs 2 – 2.5 mg.
